Over island lights and over dining table lights are the opportunity to make a design statement. The location and position mean these will be a bold design contribution to the overall effect of the room. The 'statement' can be as bold as you wish, it can conform to surrounding finishes and colours or it can contrast and stand out and stand alone. Latest fashion trends lean towards a mix of colours and finishes, so conformity and regularity are no longer the rule. It really depends on what is comfortable to your eye.
For islands up to 800mm wide consider pendants at under 200mm diameter. For wider islands you might need to look at larger fittings 300mm plus. The length of the island will determine the spacing of the pendants but as a starting point 3 fittings spaced at 1/4 , 1/2 and 3/4 of the length works well.
The activities on the island have a bearing , if a hob is on the island then there may be an extractor and this may restrict the selection of lighting. If the extractor is central then 2 light fittings one at either end of the island may be preferred and in that case larger more dominant pieces should be considered. Again if cooking on the island bear in mind the vapours and that glass pendants will need regular cleaning. If a sink is positioned in the island then again 2 fittings one either side might be more balanced that trying to fit 3 pendants.
As a guide to positioning, pendants at eye level (when standing) will be just about the right height for over island or over the table, giving sufficient clearance when reaching over whilst standing and at a comfortable level when sitting.
