Frequently Asked Questions
A Tiffany-style lamp uses a shade made from individually cut pieces of coloured glass soldered together with lead came, a technique originated by the Tiffany Studios in New York in the 1890s. The defining characteristic is the transformation that occurs when the lamp is switched on: the glass pieces become luminous and cast coloured light patterns across the surrounding surfaces. This effect is unique to stained glass and cannot be replicated by any other material. The lamp base is typically a decorative metal casting in bronze or antique brass. Modern Tiffany-style lamps from DAR Lighting and Endon use machine-cut glass assembled by hand in workshops that continue the leaded glass tradition. Lumination has been stocking Tiffany-style lamps for many years and the team at the Taunton showroom can demonstrate the on-off effect in person.
For a Tiffany lamp, a warm-white E27 LED bulb at 2,700 K and 400 to 600 lumens is the most appropriate choice. The warm colour temperature complements the warm amber, gold and red glass tones used in most Tiffany shades and produces a richer, more saturated colour effect than a cool or daylight-spectrum bulb. Avoid cool white or daylight-spectrum bulbs (4,000 K or above) as they shift the glass colours toward cooler tones and reduce the warmth of the effect. A globe-form or candle-form LED bulb at this wattage suits the visual aesthetic of the fitting better than a GLS flat-top form. For dimmable Tiffany lamps, a dimmable E27 LED at 600 lumens with a compatible dimmer gives maximum flexibility. Lampfix supplies suitable E27 LED options through Lumination. Free delivery applies to all orders over £75.
No. Tiffany lamps are accent and decorative light sources, not primary ambient light sources. The stained glass absorbs a significant proportion of the bulb output, meaning a 600 lumen bulb in a Tiffany shade may deliver 300 to 400 lumens of usable room light at most. This is adequate for creating a warm decorative atmosphere in a corner or on a side table but insufficient as the sole light source in a living room or bedroom of any size. For rooms where a Tiffany lamp is the main decorative piece, supplement with a ceiling fitting of at least 1,000 lumens, a floor lamp or additional table lamps to provide the ambient level needed for comfortable everyday use. Lumination's Taunton and Wellington showroom teams regularly advise on combining Tiffany lamps with other light sources for a complete room lighting scheme.
Lumination stocks Tiffany table lamps and floor lamps from DAR Lighting and Endon. DAR Lighting offers a broad range of Tiffany table lamps in traditional nature-inspired designs: dragonfly, rose, wisteria and peacock motifs in warm amber, green, purple and gold glass palettes. Endon produces Tiffany-style shades with both traditional and contemporary geometric designs, covering a wider colour palette. Floor lamp versions are available in the same designs on a tall standard stand for living room corner positioning. All shades use leaded stained glass construction. Lumination has been stocking Tiffany lamps as part of the residential table lamp range for more than 25 years and the Taunton showroom has examples on display to demonstrate the lit and unlit appearance.
Clean a Tiffany lamp shade gently with a soft dry cloth or a barely-damp microfibre cloth on the glass surfaces. The leaded solder lines between glass pieces should be cleaned with a dry soft brush rather than a wet cloth, as moisture can cause lead oxidation over time. Never use solvent-based cleaners, abrasive cloths or spray polishes on a Tiffany shade, as these can damage the patina of the lead came and dull the glass surface. For the metal base, a dry cloth or a cloth lightly dampened with water and a small amount of washing-up liquid is sufficient. Do not immerse any part of the lamp in water. The best cleaning approach is gentle and infrequent: dust with a soft brush regularly and wipe the glass surfaces with a dry cloth every few weeks.
