Pendant Lights for Kitchens, Dining Rooms and Hallways

The three most common locations for pendant lights are over kitchen islands, above dining tables and in entrance hallways. Over a kitchen island, the standard guidance is to hang the bottom of the shade between 70 cm and 90 cm above the worktop surface, with pendants spaced 60 to 80 cm apart along the island. Over a dining table, the shade should hang between 60 cm and 80 cm above the table surface. In a hallway, the pendant should clear standard adult head height by at least 20 cm, which usually means the bottom of the fitting must be 2.1 m or more from the floor. Lumination's team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms can help with specific measurements for your space.

For kitchen island lighting specifically, browse the dedicated kitchen island lighting range. For dining room pendants and statement hallway pieces, chandelier lights from Franklite and Elstead are worth considering alongside single-pendant options.

Pendant Light Styles: Choosing the Right Shade and Drop

Pendant lights fall into three broad shade types: closed drum or cylinder shades that direct light downward, open-bottom shades that spread light both downward and upward, and bare-bulb or cage styles that distribute light in all directions. A closed drum shade over a dining table produces a focused pool of light on the table surface, ideal for a candlelit feel. An open-bottom shade gives more ambient spread, useful where the pendant is the only ceiling light in the room. Bare-bulb pendants suit contemporary kitchens and are best used with a decorative filament LED bulb at 2,200 K to 2,700 K for warmth.

Endon and Westlite offer strong contemporary pendant ranges. DAR Lighting covers both modern and traditional styles with mid-range pricing. For statement cluster pendants and multi-arm designs, see chandelier lights. If ceiling height is limited, compare with flush ceiling lights before committing to a pendant.

Adjustable Pendant Lights and Cable Drops

Most pendant lights in Lumination's range come with a cable or rod that can be adjusted at installation. Standard cable lengths are 1 m to 1.5 m, and most pendant cables can be shortened by coiling the excess into the ceiling rose or cutting to the required length by a qualified electrician. For rooms with very high ceilings, Lumination can advise on fittings with extended drop options. Always check the minimum and maximum drop stated on the product page before purchasing. The product page also lists the shade diameter, which is critical for judging proportion against ceiling height and room size.

Frequently Asked Questions

The standard recommendation for a pendant light over a kitchen island is to hang the bottom of the shade between 70 cm and 90 cm above the worktop surface. Lower than 70 cm risks the fitting being in your eyeline when seated or working at the island. Higher than 90 cm reduces the focused task light benefit and begins to feel disconnected from the surface. At Lumination we always recommend measuring from the worktop to the ceiling, subtracting 80 cm as your ideal drop target, and then checking the adjustable range on the pendant you are considering. Our Taunton showroom team can advise for kitchens with non-standard ceiling heights or angled ceilings.
A pendant light shade should be 30 to 50 cm narrower than the table width on each side, so for a 180 cm dining table a single pendant shade of 50 to 60 cm in diameter looks proportionate. For longer tables, two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly along the table length give better light distribution and visual balance. The bottom of the shade should hang 60 to 80 cm above the table surface. Lumination lists the shade diameter and minimum and maximum drop on every pendant product page. With 1,797 or more Google reviews at 4.8 stars, our customers trust these specifications for real kitchen and dining room planning.
Standard pendant lights are rated IP20 and are not suitable for bathroom zones. Bathrooms require a minimum of IP44 for Zone 2 fittings (areas beyond 60 cm from the bath or shower edge) and IP65 for Zone 1 directly above a bath or shower. Lumination stocks IP44 and IP65 rated bathroom ceiling fittings in the bathroom ceiling lights range at lumination.co.uk/collections/bathroom-ceiling-lights. Installing a non-IP-rated pendant in a bathroom zone is against UK wiring regulations and could invalidate your insurance. Always check the IP rating before purchasing a pendant for any wet or humid room.
The most common lamp fittings in pendant lights are E27 (large Edison screw), E14 (small Edison screw) and GU10 (two-pin twist-lock). E27 is the most versatile and accepts the widest range of LED filament, globe and standard bulbs. E14 is used in smaller or decorative pendants, particularly candelabra styles. GU10 is common in directional or recessed-style pendants and spotlights. Lumination lists the lamp fitting type on every product page. For matching replacement bulbs, browse our E27 LED bulbs and GU10 LED bulb ranges at lumination.co.uk, stocked by Lampfix and Magnalux.
For a kitchen island, one pendant light per 60 to 80 cm of island length is the standard guide. A 120 cm island suits two pendants. A 180 cm island suits two to three pendants. Pendants should be centred over the island width, not pushed to one side. If the island also serves as a breakfast bar, the pendants need to be positioned so they do not create glare for seated users. Lumination's team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms regularly advises on kitchen island pendant arrangements and can help you plan spacing and drop heights for your specific kitchen layout.
