Frequently Asked Questions
For a bathroom ceiling light positioned directly above a shower or bath (Zone 1), IP65 is the minimum required rating under UK wiring regulations (BS 7671). IP65 provides protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction, which is the correct standard for positions where condensation and steam from a shower or bath can reach the fitting. If the ceiling light is not directly above the bath or shower but is within 60 cm of the water source (Zone 2), IP44 is sufficient. Lumination confirms the IP rating and zone suitability for every bathroom ceiling light in this range. Our team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms advises homeowners on zone compliance as a standard part of bathroom lighting recommendations.
A ceiling light positioned in the centre of a standard-sized bathroom ceiling (typically 2.5 m to 3 m from any bath or shower) is outside Zone 1 and Zone 2 and can technically use an IP20 fitting. However, Lumination always recommends a minimum of IP44 for any ceiling fitting in a bathroom, because the humid environment, condensation from hot showers and splashing from basins means an IP20 fitting will be exposed to moisture over time. Using IP44 throughout gives a meaningful safety margin at very little extra cost. The majority of bathroom ceiling lights in Lumination's range are IP44 as standard, making this the practical default choice for any bathroom ceiling position.
For an en-suite or small bathroom of 4 to 6 m2, a bathroom ceiling light delivering 800 to 1,200 lumens at 4,000 K provides adequate ambient light. For a family bathroom of 7 to 10 m2, aim for 1,200 to 2,000 lumens. For a large bathroom over 10 m2, 2,000 to 3,000 lumens gives comfortable, shadow-free light. These figures assume the ceiling light is the primary light source. If a mirror light or wall light is also present, the ceiling light output can be reduced by 20 to 30 percent. Lumination lists lumen output for every fitting in this range, and with 1,797 or more Google reviews at 4.8 stars, customers confirm these specifications are accurate.
A colour temperature of 3,000 K to 4,000 K is ideal for bathroom ceiling lights. At 3,000 K the light is warm-neutral and produces a flattering, natural skin tone at the mirror, which is useful if the bathroom is also used for grooming tasks. At 4,000 K the light is a clean neutral white that is bright and clear for visibility. Avoid very warm 2,700 K light in bathrooms used for makeup or shaving, as the warm cast can reduce colour accuracy. Avoid cool 6,500 K light, which creates a clinical feel unsuited to a residential bathroom. Lumination lists colour temperature on every bathroom ceiling light product page so you can choose the right option before ordering.
Lumination stocks bathroom ceiling lights from Endon, Saxby and Bravo Lighting. Endon offers the widest range, covering IP44 and IP65 flush and semi-flush ceiling lights in chrome, brushed nickel and white finishes across contemporary and traditional styles. Saxby produces specification-led IP65 bathroom ceiling lights that are particularly strong for en-suites and wetrooms where Zone 1 compliance is required. Bravo Lighting focuses on integrated LED bathroom ceiling fittings at accessible prices, covering 800 to 2,500 lumens in slim flush profiles. Lumination has stocked all three brands for many years and selects them for confirmed IP rating accuracy, build quality and availability.
