Frequently Asked Questions
For reading, an arc floor lamp or an adjustable-arm standard floor lamp with the shade positioned at 120 to 140 cm above seated eye level is the most effective choice. The shade should be positioned above and slightly to the side of the reader, directing the beam downward at the reading material rather than into the face. A lumen output of 600 to 800 lumens from the shade is sufficient for comfortable reading without glare. Colour temperature of 3,000 K to 4,000 K gives better text contrast for sustained reading than very warm 2,700 K. An arc floor lamp has the additional advantage of extending over the seating position without the base taking up floor space immediately beside the chair. Lumination stocks arc floor lamps from DAR Lighting and Endon with adjustable shade heights and beam directions. Free delivery applies to all orders over £75.
An arc floor lamp uses a tall weighted base (usually 35 to 50 cm in diameter) from which a long curved arm extends horizontally 80 to 150 cm before curving downward to the shade position. The base weight counterbalances the horizontal reach of the arm and prevents the lamp from tipping. The shade hangs at the end of the arc at a height that can be adjusted by changing the length of the vertical drop from the arc apex. This allows the shade to be positioned precisely at the height needed for the seat and user. Arc floor lamps are suited to sofas, armchairs and reading corners where there is no adjacent surface for a table lamp and where ceiling-level task light is insufficient for reading. The base should be positioned behind or to the side of the chair, not in a walking path.
For reading from a floor lamp, aim for 600 to 800 lumens delivered to the reading surface. A standard 8 W to 10 W dimmable E27 LED bulb at 600 to 800 lumens is appropriate for most reading floor lamps. The key is that the output is directed at the page: a directed 600 lumen task lamp is more effective for reading than a 1,000 lumen uplighter that diffuses its output across the ceiling. At the standard arc reading position of 120 to 140 cm above seated eye level, 600 lumens in a narrow to medium beam of 25 to 36 degrees creates a comfortable reading pool on the lap without significant glare. Lumination lists recommended bulb specifications on all task floor lamp product pages and the Taunton showroom team can demonstrate specific arc floor lamps in operation.
Standard task floor lamps stand at 140 to 175 cm in total height, with the shade at approximately 130 to 165 cm from the floor when the arm is fully extended. Arc floor lamps have a base height of 120 to 140 cm and an arc that extends the shade to 180 to 200 cm at the apex before dropping to 130 to 160 cm at the shade position. The exact shade height depends on the arm adjustment setting. Lumination lists the total stand height, minimum and maximum shade height, and horizontal arm reach for all arc floor lamps in this range. For rooms with ceilings below 2.4 m, confirm the arc apex height does not exceed the ceiling clearance, as a very tall arc lamp in a low-ceilinged room will arch close to the ceiling. The Taunton showroom team can advise on specific arc floor lamp proportions for low-ceiling rooms.
Yes. Lumination stocks adjustable arc floor lamps from DAR Lighting and Endon with height-adjustable arms and positionable shades. The adjustment mechanism allows the arc arm height to be changed using a wing nut or locking collar, and the shade angle can be repositioned on a swivel or tilting mount at the end of the arc. This gives the user full control over both the horizontal reach and the shade angle, allowing the lamp to be precisely positioned for a specific chair and user. Some arc floor lamps in the Lumination range also include an inline dimmer switch on the cable for brightness adjustment without a wall dimmer. Lumination has been stocking arc floor lamps from specialist lamp manufacturers for more than 25 years and the team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms can demonstrate the adjustment range of specific models.
