Table Lamps for Bedside, Living Room and Hallway Use

Table lamps serve different roles depending on where they are placed. A bedside table lamp needs to be bright enough for reading but positioned at a height that allows the switch to be reached from a lying position, with the shade bottom at approximately shoulder height when seated. A living room table lamp on a sideboard or console table adds ambient light at a lower level than a ceiling fitting, reducing the contrast between a bright ceiling and dark lower walls. A hallway table lamp on a console creates a welcoming focal point and supplements stairwell lighting.

Lumination stocks table lamps from DAR Lighting, Endon, Westlite and Sarah Miller. Sarah Miller produces handmade ceramic lamp bases made in the UK, which represent the most genuinely non-commodity option in our table lamp range. For decorative table lamps with stained glass shades, see the Tiffany lamps collection.

Table Lamp Base Heights and Shade Proportions

The base height of a table lamp determines the position of the shade and the spread of light. A lamp with a 40 cm base and a 30 cm shade gives a total height of approximately 65 cm, suitable for a bedside table or side table. A taller lamp of 55 to 65 cm base height gives a total height of 80 to 90 cm, suited to larger surfaces such as console tables and sideboards where more visual presence is needed. The shade diameter should be roughly equal to the base height minus 5 to 10 cm for visual balance: a 50 cm base suits a 40 to 45 cm shade.

Table Lamp Lumen Output and Colour Temperature

For a bedside reading lamp, 400 to 600 lumens at 2,700 K warm white is the standard recommendation. This provides adequate light for reading without over-brightening the room or disturbing a sleeping partner. For a living room accent lamp intended purely for atmosphere, 200 to 400 lumens at 2,700 K with a translucent shade gives a warm ambient glow. For a desk or task table lamp that needs to illuminate work papers clearly, 600 to 800 lumens at 3,000 K to 4,000 K is more appropriate. Lumination lists lumen output and colour temperature for all table lamp bulb recommendations on each product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a bedside table lamp, a total height (base plus shade) of 55 to 65 cm is practical for most standard bedside table heights of 50 to 60 cm. At this combined height, the shade bottom sits approximately at shoulder height when seated in bed, keeping the bare bulb out of direct sightline and positioning the switch within reach. If the bedside table is lower than 50 cm, a lamp with a slightly taller base of 40 to 50 cm compensates and maintains the shade at the correct height. At Lumination's Taunton showroom you can compare table lamp heights against standard bedside table dimensions before ordering. Lumination stocks bedside table lamps from DAR Lighting, Endon and Westlite in a range of base heights from 30 to 60 cm.
Most UK table lamps use an E27 (large Edison screw), B22 (bayonet cap) or E14 (small Edison screw) lamp holder. E27 is the most common and accepts the widest range of LED bulbs, including globe, candle, GLS and filament styles. B22 is the standard bayonet fitting used in many traditional and transitional-style table lamps. E14 is used in smaller decorative table lamps and candelabra-style fittings. The lamp holder type is specified on every Lumination product page. Dimmable LED bulbs are available in all three cap types, which is useful if the table lamp is to be used on a dimmer circuit. Lampfix and Magnalux supply good-quality E27, B22 and E14 LED options through Lumination. Free delivery applies to all orders over £75.
A bedside table lamp used for reading needs to deliver 400 to 600 lumens at the page. A 6 W to 8 W LED bulb producing 500 to 600 lumens in a translucent shade is sufficient for comfortable reading without excess brightness. If the lamp is used only for ambient atmosphere and not for reading, 200 to 300 lumens at 2,700 K warm white is enough. If the lamp is on a dimmer, a 600 to 800 lumen bulb at full brightness for reading and dimmed down to 200 to 300 lumens for atmosphere gives maximum flexibility from a single lamp. Lumination lists recommended bulb wattage and lumen output on every table lamp product page. With 1,797 or more Google reviews at 4.8 stars, customers rely on these specifications for real bedside planning.
A table lamp can be the sole light source in a living room for relaxed evening use, but it is unlikely to provide sufficient light for reading or tasks involving detailed work. A single 600 to 800 lumen table lamp in a 20 m2 living room produces a comfortable, residential atmosphere but leaves most of the room in shadow. For reading or for rooms where more general ambient light is needed, a floor lamp or additional table lamp supplements the single-source shortfall. Two table lamps of 500 to 600 lumens each, positioned on surfaces at either end of the room, give a better-balanced ambient light in a living room without a ceiling fitting. Lumination stocks matching table lamp pairs from DAR Lighting and Endon to simplify this approach.
Lumination stocks table lamps from DAR Lighting, Endon, Westlite and Sarah Miller. DAR Lighting offers the broadest range across traditional, transitional and contemporary styles at accessible prices. Endon covers contemporary and statement table lamps with stronger design character. Westlite focuses on clean modern designs with good LED integration. Sarah Miller produces handmade ceramic lamp bases made in the UK at Lumination's Taunton premises, using a distinctive artisan approach that makes each base genuinely unique. Lumination has been selecting table lamps from specialist manufacturers for more than 25 years and the team at our Taunton and Wellington showrooms can advise on matching table lamps to your room scheme.
