Fire-Rated vs Standard Recessed Spotlights

A fire-rated recessed spotlight includes an intumescent seal around the fitting that expands in the event of a fire, closing the hole cut in the ceiling and maintaining the fire resistance of the ceiling structure for the required period (typically 30 or 60 minutes). Fire-rated downlights are a building regulation requirement wherever a ceiling light is installed above a habitable room (for example, a kitchen above a bedroom, or a ground floor ceiling above a suspended floor with an enclosed void). In most UK domestic installations, fire-rated downlights are the correct choice and Lumination recommends them as standard.

Lumination stocks fire-rated recessed downlights from Saxby and Bravo Lighting in both GU10 and integrated LED formats. Standard (non-fire-rated) recessed spotlights are also available where fire resistance is not a requirement. For surface-mounted alternatives, browse surface mounted spotlights. For the full spotlight range including track systems, see indoor spotlights.

GU10 vs Integrated LED Recessed Downlights

GU10 recessed downlights accept replaceable GU10 bulbs, which means the light source can be upgraded or replaced without changing the fitting. This gives flexibility to change lumen output or colour temperature by swapping to a different GU10 LED bulb. The GU10 downlight body is typically lower in cost than an integrated LED downlight and is easier to source in future years. Integrated LED recessed downlights have the LED module built into the fitting body. They cannot accept a replacement bulb, but the LED module is designed to last 30,000 to 50,000 hours, significantly longer than a GU10 bulb's 15,000 to 25,000 hours. Integrated LEDs also allow slimmer fitting depths suited to shallow ceiling voids.

Recessed Downlight Cutout Sizes and Installation Depth

Before ordering recessed spotlights, confirm two measurements: the cutout diameter required (the hole size to be cut in the ceiling) and the installation depth needed above the ceiling (the depth of the fitting body that must fit within the ceiling void). Standard cutout diameters are 65 mm, 70 mm, 75 mm and 85 mm. Ceiling void depths for standard downlights are 55 mm to 95 mm. Shallow recessed downlights with depths of 35 to 50 mm are available from Saxby and Bravo Lighting for installations above insulation or where the ceiling void is restricted. Lumination lists cutout diameter and installation depth on every recessed downlight product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fire-rated downlights are a building regulation requirement whenever a recessed ceiling light is installed in a ceiling that separates two habitable rooms or a room from an enclosed floor void. In practical terms, this means most domestic ceiling installations in England and Wales require fire-rated downlights. If the kitchen is on the ground floor above an enclosed underfloor void, fire-rated downlights are required. If the kitchen is below a bedroom or another habitable room on the floor above, fire-rated downlights are required. The fire-rated seal maintains the ceiling fire resistance (typically 30 or 60 minutes) in the event of a fire. Lumination always recommends fire-rated downlights for domestic kitchen and living room installations as a standard precaution. Saxby and Bravo Lighting produce reliable fire-rated recessed options in both GU10 and integrated LED formats.
Standard recessed spotlight cutout sizes are 65 mm, 70 mm, 75 mm and 85 mm in diameter. The most common sizes in UK domestic installations are 70 mm and 75 mm. Before ordering, confirm the cutout size you need and ensure the ceiling has sufficient void depth for the fitting body: standard recessed downlights need 55 to 95 mm of depth above the ceiling surface. Shallow recessed downlights for restricted ceiling voids need 35 to 50 mm. Lumination lists the cutout diameter and installation depth on every recessed spotlight product page. If you are retrofitting into an existing hole, measure the existing cutout diameter carefully and select a fitting with a matching or slightly larger cutout size. Our Taunton showroom team can advise on cutout compatibility.
For recessed downlights as the primary ambient ceiling light in a kitchen or living room, space fittings at 1 to 1.2 m intervals in a grid. For a 12 m2 kitchen, 8 to 10 downlights at 600 lumens each deliver 4,800 to 6,000 lumens total, which is adequate for a well-lit kitchen. For a living room where softer ambient light is appropriate, 6 to 8 downlights at 400 lumens each in a 20 m2 room gives 2,400 to 3,200 lumens, best supplemented with floor lamps or table lamps. The outer row of downlights should be positioned 0.5 to 0.75 m from the wall. Lumination's team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms can help with spacing calculations for any room size. Yes. Recessed downlights with IP44 ratings are suitable for Zone 2 bathroom use. IP65-rated recessed downlights are required for Zone 1 positions directly above a bath or shower. Standard recessed downlights with IP20 ratings must not be used in bathroom zones under UK wiring regulations. Lumination stocks IP44 and IP65 recessed bathroom downlights in the bathroom ceiling lights range. Saxby produces a particularly strong IP65 recessed downlight range for shower zone use. Always confirm the IP rating and zone suitability of any downlight before installing it in a bathroom. Lumination lists IP rating and zone suitability on every product page and the team can confirm bathroom zone compliance before you order.
GU10 recessed downlights accept a standard GU10 bulb that can be replaced when it reaches end of life or when you want to change the lumen output or colour temperature. This makes them more flexible and future-proof, and GU10 LED bulbs are widely available. Integrated LED recessed downlights have the LED driver and module built into the fitting body with no replaceable lamp. They cannot be retrofitted with a different bulb, but the integrated LED module typically lasts 30,000 to 50,000 hours compared to 15,000 to 25,000 hours for a GU10 LED bulb. Integrated LEDs also allow slimmer fitting profiles suitable for shallow ceiling voids of 35 to 50 mm. Lumination stocks both formats from Saxby and Bravo Lighting with lumen output and installation depth confirmed on every product page.
