PIR Outdoor Lights: How Motion Sensor Activation Works

A PIR (passive infrared) outdoor light contains a sensor that detects infrared radiation emitted by warm bodies (humans and animals) moving within the detection zone. When movement is detected, the light activates automatically and stays on for a set period (typically 30 seconds to 5 minutes, adjustable). After the time-on period expires with no further movement detected, the light deactivates. This sensor-triggered activation makes PIR lights more effective as deterrents than constant-on lights, as the sudden illumination signals detection and draws attention to the area.

For outdoor security floodlights combining high output with sensor control, see outdoor security lights. Brand Saxby leads our PIR outdoor light range.

PIR Sensor Settings: Range, Sensitivity and Time-On

Most PIR outdoor lights from Saxby include three adjustable settings. The detection range (LUX) setting adjusts the ambient light level at which the PIR activates: on the LUX setting, the PIR only fires in low-light or dark conditions, preventing daytime activation. The sensitivity (SEN) setting adjusts how much infrared change is required to trigger the sensor: high sensitivity detects smaller movements at greater range; low sensitivity reduces false triggers from small animals. The time-on (TIME) setting determines how long the light stays on after the last detected movement, from 10 seconds to 10 minutes on most models.

PIR Outdoor Light Positioning for Maximum Coverage

For front door and driveway coverage, mount the PIR fitting at 2.5 to 3 m above ground level on the house wall. At this height, a 120-degree PIR sensor covers a detection zone of approximately 8 to 12 m in depth and 6 to 8 m in width directly in front of the fitting. Avoid mounting PIR fittings in positions where moving trees, traffic on an adjacent road or heat from a boiler flue can cause false triggering. Lumination's Taunton and Wellington showrooms can advise on PIR light positioning for specific driveways and entrance configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A PIR outdoor light uses a passive infrared sensor to detect heat movement from people and animals within its detection zone. When the sensor detects a warm body moving through the zone, it triggers the light to activate at full output. The light stays on for a set time period (adjustable from 10 seconds to 10 minutes on most models) and deactivates if no further movement is detected. The sensor is passive in that it does not emit any signal but only responds to changes in infrared radiation in its field of view. The LUX setting on most PIR outdoor lights prevents daytime activation by only allowing the sensor to trigger in ambient light conditions below a set threshold, so the light activates only after dark when it is actually needed. Saxby PIR outdoor lights include full sensor adjustment on the fitting body.
The detection range of a standard residential PIR outdoor light is typically 8 to 12 m in depth with a 120 to 180 degree horizontal coverage angle. At a mounting height of 2.5 to 3 m, this covers a detection zone of approximately 8 to 12 m in front of the fitting and 6 to 10 m in width. The actual effective range depends on the ambient temperature: in cold weather the contrast between the person's body temperature and the ambient temperature is greater, which can increase effective range. In warm summer conditions, the reduced temperature differential can slightly decrease sensitivity and range. Lumination lists the detection range and coverage angle of every PIR outdoor light in this range on the product page. Saxby's PIR fittings are independently tested for sensor performance and listed with confirmed range figures.
Yes. Most PIR outdoor lights from Saxby include a sensitivity adjustment, typically a small dial on the sensor head or rear of the fitting, labelled SEN. Setting the sensitivity higher increases the range at which movement triggers the sensor and makes the sensor more responsive to smaller movements. Setting it lower reduces the range and requires larger or more distinct movement to trigger, which is useful for reducing false activations from small animals, blowing foliage or traffic on an adjacent road. The time-on duration and LUX threshold settings can also be adjusted on most models. Lumination confirms which settings are adjustable for each PIR outdoor light in the product page specifications. The Taunton showroom team can advise on the recommended sensitivity setting for specific installation positions and environments. Free delivery applies to all PIR outdoor light orders over £75.
PIR outdoor lights require IP65 ratings for any exposed outdoor position. IP65 provides protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction and is the correct standard for fittings directly exposed to UK weather conditions. The PIR sensor component must also be IP65 rated, as it is positioned on the exterior of the fitting and is directly exposed to rain, frost and humidity. Lumination confirms that all PIR sensor components and fitting bodies in this range carry IP65 as a minimum. Some Saxby PIR fittings carry IK ratings in addition to IP65, which is relevant for public area and commercial installations where impact resistance is a consideration. Never use an indoor PIR switch or a non-IP-rated PIR sensor in an outdoor position.
Lumination stocks PIR outdoor lights from Saxby and Endon. Saxby produces the widest range of PIR outdoor lights, covering compact wall-mounted PIR sensor lights in lantern and contemporary styles, PIR floodlights for driveway and perimeter coverage, and PIR sensor security lights with adjustable detection settings. Saxby PIR fittings carry confirmed IP65 ratings with independently tested sensor performance specifications. Endon covers decorative outdoor PIR wall lights in lantern and contemporary styles for front door and garden wall use. Both brands are selected by Lumination's buying team for reliable sensor performance and confirmed IP compliance in UK outdoor conditions. Lumination has been supplying PIR outdoor lights for residential security applications for more than 25 years from the Taunton base in Somerset.
