Frequently Asked Questions
A garden post light installation requires an underground electrical cable buried at a minimum depth of 600 mm below a garden path or lawn area and 750 mm below a driveway or vehicle access area. The cable must be enclosed in conduit or be of the armoured cable type suitable for direct burial. The post itself is set into a concrete-filled core-drilled hole at the base of the post or surface-mounted to a base plate. All outdoor electrical cable work must be carried out by a qualified electrician and notified under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. The notified work will be self-certified by the contractor or assessed by Building Control. Lumination recommends discussing the cable route and trench depth with your electrician before selecting the post light, as cable route limitations can affect post position choices.
For driveway-edge marking, a garden post light of 0.8 m to 1.2 m in height is the most common choice. At this height, the fitting is visible from a distance when driving and provides adequate illumination of the path surface immediately around the post. For a longer garden path where the posts need to cover more ground, 1.2 m to 1.5 m height gives slightly better light throw across the path width. Low post lights of 0.4 m to 0.6 m height are better for garden border marking and ornamental path edges than for driveways where vehicle clearance is a consideration. Lumination lists the post height, lantern head size and lumen output for every garden post light in this range. The Taunton showroom team can advise on the best height for specific driveway and path configurations. Free delivery applies to all orders over £75.
In most cases, installing a garden post light on a private residential property does not require planning permission, as it falls within permitted development rights for exterior lighting. However, planning permission may be required if the property is in a Conservation Area, a Listed Building, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or if the proposed lighting is of an unusually high output that could cause light pollution or affect neighbours. Permitted development rights for outdoor lighting were updated in 2023 to require consideration of light spillage and glare, and Lumination recommends checking with your local planning authority if the installation is in a sensitive area. The electrical installation under Part P requires notification but not planning permission in most cases. Lumination's team can advise on standard residential post light installation requirements.
Garden post lights in any outdoor position require a minimum IP65 rating. IP65 provides protection against water jets from any direction and is the correct standard for fittings directly exposed to rain and weather in a UK garden or driveway position. All garden post lights in Lumination's range carry IP65 as a minimum. Some ground-recessed post-light alternatives, such as ground-recessed uplighters set into paths, may require IP66 or IP67 due to the risk of standing water accumulation in the recess. Lumination confirms the IP rating for every outdoor fitting on the product page. Saxby and Elstead both produce IP65 garden post lights with confirmed ratings from independent testing. Lumination has been supplying outdoor garden lighting with confirmed IP ratings for more than 25 years.
Lumination stocks garden pillar and post lights from Saxby and Elstead. Saxby produces contemporary garden post lights in dark grey and anthracite powder-coated aluminium with integrated LED heads, suited to modern landscaped gardens and contemporary new-build properties. Elstead covers traditional lantern-head post lights in black iron and aged bronze on cast post columns, suited to period gardens, country properties and traditional landscaping schemes. Both brands carry IP65 ratings and are selected by Lumination's buying team for outdoor weather resistance and visual quality. Lumination has been supplying garden post lights to UK homeowners for more than 25 years and the Taunton showroom team can advise on matching post light styles to existing outdoor wall lights.
