Frequently Asked Questions
The standard recommendation for a pendant light over a kitchen island is to hang the bottom of the shade between 70 cm and 90 cm above the worktop surface. Lower than 70 cm risks the fitting being in your eyeline when seated or working at the island. Higher than 90 cm reduces the focused task light benefit and begins to feel disconnected from the surface. At Lumination we always recommend measuring from the worktop to the ceiling, subtracting 80 cm as your ideal drop target, and then checking the adjustable range on the pendant you are considering. Our Taunton showroom team can advise for kitchens with non-standard ceiling heights or angled ceilings.
A pendant light shade should be 30 to 50 cm narrower than the table width on each side, so for a 180 cm dining table a single pendant shade of 50 to 60 cm in diameter looks proportionate. For longer tables, two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly along the table length give better light distribution and visual balance. The bottom of the shade should hang 60 to 80 cm above the table surface. Lumination lists the shade diameter and minimum and maximum drop on every pendant product page. With 1,797 or more Google reviews at 4.8 stars, our customers trust these specifications for real kitchen and dining room planning.
Standard pendant lights are rated IP20 and are not suitable for bathroom zones. Bathrooms require a minimum of IP44 for Zone 2 fittings (areas beyond 60 cm from the bath or shower edge) and IP65 for Zone 1 directly above a bath or shower. Lumination stocks IP44 and IP65 rated bathroom ceiling fittings in the bathroom ceiling lights range at lumination.co.uk/collections/bathroom-ceiling-lights. Installing a non-IP-rated pendant in a bathroom zone is against UK wiring regulations and could invalidate your insurance. Always check the IP rating before purchasing a pendant for any wet or humid room.
The most common lamp fittings in pendant lights are E27 (large Edison screw), E14 (small Edison screw) and GU10 (two-pin twist-lock). E27 is the most versatile and accepts the widest range of LED filament, globe and standard bulbs. E14 is used in smaller or decorative pendants, particularly candelabra styles. GU10 is common in directional or recessed-style pendants and spotlights. Lumination lists the lamp fitting type on every product page. For matching replacement bulbs, browse our E27 LED bulbs and GU10 LED bulb ranges at lumination.co.uk, stocked by Lampfix and Magnalux.
For a kitchen island, one pendant light per 60 to 80 cm of island length is the standard guide. A 120 cm island suits two pendants. A 180 cm island suits two to three pendants. Pendants should be centred over the island width, not pushed to one side. If the island also serves as a breakfast bar, the pendants need to be positioned so they do not create glare for seated users. Lumination's team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms regularly advises on kitchen island pendant arrangements and can help you plan spacing and drop heights for your specific kitchen layout.
