IP65 Outdoor Pendant Lights and Cable Requirements

An outdoor pendant light must be IP65 rated to the minimum, and the outdoor-grade cable must also be rated for outdoor use. Standard indoor pendant flex is not suitable for outdoor installations as it will degrade rapidly in UV and moisture exposure. Outdoor Pendant Light Drop Length and Positioning

For an outdoor covered terrace pendant over a dining table, the same hanging height guidance applies as indoors: the bottom of the shade should hang 60 to 80 cm above the table surface. Confirm the ceiling height of the pergola or canopy structure before ordering, as outdoor canopy heights vary more than indoor ceiling heights. Most outdoor pendants have adjustable drop cables of 1 to 1.5 m. The drop must also clear any condensation or rain drip lines from the canopy roof structure. To hang outdoor pendant lights from a pergola beam, a fixed outdoor-rated ceiling rose or junction box must be installed on the beam by a qualified electrician, connected to an underground mains cable run from the house. The ceiling rose must be IP65 rated. The pendant is then connected via the outdoor-rated pendant cable in the standard way. For a pergola over an outdoor dining table, position the rose centrally above the table and allow the pendant to drop to 60 to 80 cm above the table surface. Multiple pendants on a pergola beam should be spaced 50 to 70 cm apart along the beam length, centred over the table. At this height the fitting is within visual connection of the table, provides focused task light on the surface below and is above comfortable seated head height for all but the tallest seated users. Confirm the ceiling height of the pergola or canopy before selecting the pendant, as many outdoor canopy structures are lower than indoor ceilings and may limit the available drop.
