Frequently Asked Questions
Victorian terraces suit traditional outdoor lanterns in black powder-coated cast iron with tapered or ogee-curved glass panels, in designs that reference late 19th century British street and coach-house lamp styles. Elstead produces a comprehensive range of Victorian-appropriate outdoor lanterns in confirmed IP65 ratings, covering simple single-pane designs for narrower terrace fronts and more elaborate multi-pane lanterns for wider or grander Victorian facades. Key finish details to look for are black or aged-iron metalwork, clear or seeded glass panels and flat backplates suited to brick wall mounting. Avoid lanterns with very modern geometric profiles or anthracite powder-coat finishes, which tend to read as contemporary interpretations that do not match the Victorian building style. Lumination's Taunton showroom team advises on period property outdoor lantern selection regularly.
Outdoor lanterns in any exposed garden or entrance position require a minimum of IP65. IP65 provides protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction and is the correct standard for fittings that will be exposed to direct rain, which includes the vast majority of UK domestic outdoor lantern positions. IP44 provides splash protection only and is technically sufficient only for lanterns installed in covered and sheltered positions where there is no risk of direct water contact. Lumination always recommends IP65 for all outdoor lantern installations as the practical standard. Elstead outdoor lanterns carry confirmed IP65 ratings across the full range. Endon also produces IP65 rated contemporary lantern designs. All outdoor lanterns in Lumination's range have the IP rating confirmed on the product page.
For a standard front door of 80 to 90 cm width, a wall lantern of 20 to 30 cm in height is proportionate. For a wider front door of 90 to 120 cm, a lantern of 25 to 40 cm in height suits the scale better. For a very grand entrance with a full-height doorcase, a lantern of 40 to 60 cm or a matching pair of smaller lanterns one to each side of the door gives appropriate visual scale. The lantern width should also be checked: a lantern of 15 to 20 cm in width projects less into the entrance area than a wider design and suits narrower porch depths. Lumination lists the full dimensions (height, width and projection distance from wall) of every outdoor lantern in this range. The Taunton showroom team can advise on scale for specific property entrances. Free delivery applies to orders over £75.
Yes. Most outdoor lanterns from Elstead and Endon use E27 or E14 lamp holders that accept LED bulbs directly. For an outdoor lantern where the filament of the bulb is visible through the glass panels, a clear vintage-style LED filament bulb at 2,700 K produces the most authentic appearance of a flame-lit lantern while consuming only 4 to 6 W. For lanterns where the bulb is concealed behind an opal or frosted glass panel, a standard GLS-form LED bulb at 600 to 800 lumens gives good light output. Outdoor lanterns must use LED bulbs rated for outdoor use (these are standard LED bulbs and all current LED types are suitable for outdoor use within a sealed lantern body). Lumination lists the lamp holder type on every outdoor lantern product page.
