LED Outdoor Floodlights for Security and Garden Use

Outdoor floodlights deliver high-output, wide-beam illumination of large exterior areas from a single fitting. A security floodlight at 2,000 to 5,000 lumens mounted at 2.5 to 3.5 m on a house wall covers a driveway of 6 to 10 m in depth, triggering on PIR sensor activation when approached. A garden area floodlight at 1,500 to 3,000 lumens permanently illuminates a garden entertaining area, sports pitch or commercial loading bay. LED technology has replaced halogen in almost all floodlight applications, reducing power consumption from 500 W halogen to 20 to 50 W LED for equivalent lumen output.

Lumination stocks LED floodlights from Saxby in the main residential and light commercial range. For PIR-specific sensor lights, see the PIR motion sensor lights range. For security-specific floodlights with combined sensor and flood coverage, browse the outdoor security lights range.

PIR Floodlights vs Fixed Floodlights

A PIR floodlight activates only when the motion sensor detects movement within its detection zone, typically 8 to 15 m range and 120 to 180 degrees of horizontal coverage. This conserves energy, provides an active deterrent signal and avoids the continuous light output of a fixed fitting that can cause light pollution and neighbour issues. A fixed floodlight runs continuously when switched on, which suits permanent illumination of a garden area, a commercial car park or a work area where continuous light is needed regardless of movement. Most Saxby PIR floodlights include adjustable sensitivity, detection range and time-on duration settings accessible from the fitting.

Floodlight Mounting Height and Coverage Angle

For a residential driveway security floodlight, a mounting height of 2.5 to 3.5 m on the house wall gives the best balance of detection coverage and shadow minimisation. Too low and the fitting can be obscured by parked vehicles. Too high and the detection cone of the PIR sensor may overshoot the driveway and trigger on the pavement or road. A 120-degree wide-angle floodlight at 2.5 m height covers approximately 6 m x 8 m of detection zone. Lumination's Taunton and Wellington showrooms carry Saxby floodlights and the team can advise on mounting heights and detection zone coverage for specific driveway and perimeter configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a residential driveway security floodlight, 1,500 to 3,000 lumens is adequate for most standard driveways of 4 to 8 m length. At this output level the driveway is clearly visible and an approaching person is clearly identifiable without the blinding glare of a very high-output commercial floodlight. For larger areas such as a commercial car park, a wider garden area or a perimeter wall run, 3,000 to 6,000 lumens per fitting is more appropriate, with multiple fittings covering the full area. PIR-triggered floodlights do not need to run continuously at full output to be effective: the sudden activation of even a 1,500 lumen floodlight in a dark driveway is a strong deterrent signal. Lumination stocks Saxby LED floodlights in outputs from 1,400 to 10,000 lumens with confirmed lumen values on every product page. Free delivery applies to all outdoor floodlight orders over £75.
For a residential driveway or property perimeter, a security floodlight should be mounted at 2.5 to 3.5 m above ground level. This height positions the fitting above head height (deterring tampering), gives a good downward illumination angle for the detection zone below and avoids the fitting being obscured by parked vehicles. At 2.5 m height, a floodlight with a 120-degree beam angle covers approximately 6 to 8 m of ground width directly below. At 3.5 m height, the same beam covers a wider area but with slightly reduced illuminance at ground level. A mounting height below 2 m risks the fitting being obscured or repositioned. Above 4 m, the detection cone of the PIR sensor may overshoot the driveway and trigger on pedestrians on the adjacent pavement. Lumination's team advises on optimal mounting heights for specific driveway configurations.
A PIR floodlight is dormant (off) and activates automatically when the built-in passive infrared motion sensor detects heat movement from a person or animal within its detection zone, typically 8 to 15 m range. It then switches off after a set time period (adjustable from 30 seconds to several minutes). A fixed floodlight is controlled by a standard on-off switch or timer and runs continuously at full output when switched on. PIR floodlights are better for security use because the sudden activation provides a deterrent signal and conserves energy between activations. Fixed floodlights are better for permanent illumination of a working area, garden entertaining area or commercial loading bay where consistent light is needed regardless of movement. Most Saxby PIR floodlights allow the sensitivity, range and time-on period to be adjusted. Lumination stocks both PIR and fixed LED floodlights from Saxby.
A 20 W to 30 W LED floodlight replaces a 500 W halogen floodlight in terms of lumen output. A 500 W halogen produces approximately 8,500 to 10,000 lumens. A 30 W LED floodlight produces 2,400 to 3,000 lumens, which is lower in raw output but far more efficient in delivering useful directed light. Most residential driveway applications that used a 500 W halogen floodlight are adequately served by a 20 to 30 W LED, as the halogen was often over-specified for the area being lit. If the application genuinely required 8,000 to 10,000 lumens (large commercial car park, sports area), then a 60 to 100 W LED equivalent is needed. Saxby produces a full range of LED floodlights from 10 W to 100 W with confirmed lumen output, replacing halogen equivalents from 150 W to 1,000 W. Lumination stocks the full Saxby LED floodlight range.
Lumination stocks outdoor LED floodlights from Saxby. Saxby is one of the UK's leading functional outdoor lighting manufacturers, producing a comprehensive range of residential and light commercial LED floodlights in 10 W to 100 W outputs. The range covers compact wall-mounted security floodlights at 10 to 30 W for residential driveways, mid-range PIR security floodlights at 20 to 50 W for larger perimeter areas and high-output fixed floodlights at 50 to 100 W for commercial and industrial applications. All Saxby floodlights carry IP65 ratings, with many also carrying IK rating (impact resistance) for vandalism-prone locations. Lumination has been stocking Saxby outdoor lighting for many years, selected by our buying team for specification accuracy, reliability and availability.
