Frequently Asked Questions
Outdoor decking lights are available in three main types. Post-cap deck lights mount to the top of a balustrade post and direct light downward around the deck perimeter. Recessed deck board lights set flush into the deck board or step face, providing a minimal appearance with no visible body above the deck surface. Surface-mounted step lights mount to the vertical face of a deck step riser and project light outward and downward to illuminate the tread below. Each type suits a different part of the deck: post-cap lights for the perimeter, recessed board lights for the deck surface itself, and step riser lights for safety-level stair illumination. Most decking light installations use a combination of all three types to achieve a complete and safe lighting scheme. Lumination stocks all three types from Saxby and Endon with confirmed IP65 ratings.
Outdoor decking lights require a minimum IP65 rating. Decks are directly exposed to UK weather conditions including rain, frost and high humidity, and the lighting must be rated accordingly. Recessed deck board fittings that sit below the deck board surface and may collect water require IP67 as a minimum, as standing water can accumulate in the recess around the fitting. Surface-mounted deck post fittings exposed to direct rain require IP65. Lumination confirms the IP rating for every outdoor decking light in the range on the product page. All decking lights in the range carry at least IP65. Saxby produces IP65 and IP67 outdoor decking lights with independently tested ratings. Free delivery applies to all outdoor decking light orders over £75.
Recessed deck board light installation requires a hole or slot cut into the deck board to the correct dimensions for the specific fitting, a cable routed under the deck through a conduit or buried cable run from the house electrical supply, the fitting inserted and secured to the deck sub-frame, and the face plate set flush with the deck surface. The cable runs beneath the decking from fitting to fitting in a loop or run configuration, connecting back to a suitable waterproof junction box and then to the house distribution board. All outdoor electrical work must be notified under Part P of the Building Regulations and carried out by a qualified electrician. Lumination lists the cutout dimensions and cable entry position for every recessed deck light in the range. The Taunton showroom team can advise on installation approaches for different deck construction types.
For outdoor decking lights used primarily for evening entertaining, 2,700 K warm white produces the most relaxed and inviting atmosphere, creating a warm residential quality suited to outdoor dining and socialising in a garden setting. For decking lights used primarily for safety-level illumination of steps and the deck edge after dark, 3,000 K provides slightly better visual clarity while still maintaining a warm, residential character. Avoid 4,000 K and above for domestic decking lights: the cooler tone feels clinical in an outdoor entertaining context and creates a commercial rather than residential atmosphere. The same colour temperature should be used consistently across all decking light types in a single installation for visual coherence. Lumination lists colour temperature on every outdoor decking light product page.
Lumination stocks outdoor decking lights from Saxby and Endon. Saxby produces IP65 and IP67 outdoor decking lights in stainless steel and black finishes, covering post-cap deck lights, recessed deck board fittings and step riser lights with integrated LED modules at 50 to 200 lumens per fitting. Endon covers decorative outdoor decking light options in a broader range of finishes including bronze and aged brass suited to traditional timber deck schemes. Both brands carry confirmed IP ratings and are selected by Lumination's buying team for outdoor deck lighting reliability in UK conditions. Lumination has been supplying outdoor decking lights for residential garden deck installations for more than 25 years and the Taunton showroom team can advise on complete deck lighting schemes covering all three lighting types.
