Frequently Asked Questions
For LED bulbs you need a trailing-edge (also called electronic or capacitive) dimmer switch, not the older leading-edge (resistive or inductive) type. Leading-edge dimmers were designed for halogen and incandescent bulbs and typically have a minimum load of 60 W or more, which LED circuits rarely reach. With LED bulbs, a leading-edge dimmer causes flickering, buzzing and reduced dimming range. A trailing-edge LED dimmer has a minimum load of 10 to 25 W, which suits LED circuits of 3 to 10 bulbs. Always check the total wattage of all dimmable LED bulbs on the circuit and confirm it exceeds the dimmer minimum load. Also verify the bulbs are individually marked as dimmable. Lumination stocks LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmers from Magnalux, listed with minimum and maximum load ratings.
A ceiling rose is the circular cover fitting that conceals the junction between the fixed ceiling wiring and the pendant flex. In a UK domestic installation, the lighting circuit terminates at the ceiling with a junction box connector, and the ceiling rose covers this connector while providing a hook or strain relief for the pendant flex. Ceiling roses are required for suspended pendant lights and are standard fittings included with most pendant lights. If you are making a custom pendant from a bare bulb holder and shade, a separate ceiling rose from Lampfix is required to complete the installation. Ceiling roses are available in white, chrome, brass and antique brass from Lampfix through Lumination. A qualified electrician connects the fixed wiring to the rose terminal block; the pendant flex connection to the rose is a mechanical rather than electrical connection.
Yes. Lamp holder adapters are available that allow an E27 lamp holder to accept B22 bulbs, or vice versa. These are simple push-fit or screw-fit converters that change the cap type accepted by the holder without altering the electrical connection. Lampfix supplies a range of lamp holder adapters through Lumination covering the most common UK cap conversions: E27 to B22, B22 to E27, E27 to E14 and E14 to E27. Check the current wattage rating of the lamp holder before fitting an adapter, as some decorative lamp holders have lower wattage ratings than standard. With modern LED bulbs at 4 to 10 W, this is rarely a concern. Lumination stocks lamp holder adapters alongside the full Lampfix accessories range. Free delivery applies to all orders over £75.
For a pendant light, 3-core twisted flex of 0.5 mm2 cross section is the standard cable. This flex carries the live, neutral and earth connections and is rated for standard domestic lighting loads. Twisted fabric flex from Lampfix is available in a range of colours including black, white, grey, copper, gold and many other finishes, allowing the flex itself to be a design feature of a pendant fitting. Smooth PVC flex in white, black and grey is also available for more utilitarian installations. For pendant lights where the cable drop is adjustable, coiling the excess flex inside the ceiling rose is the standard approach. Never use mains extension cable or appliance flex for pendant light installations. Lumination stocks Lampfix twisted and smooth pendant flex in standard 1 m to 3 m lengths.
Yes. Lumination stocks inline cable switches from Lampfix that fit into the pendant flex between the ceiling rose and the bulb holder, allowing the light to be switched on and off at the fitting without requiring a wall switch. These are used for bedside pendant lights, table lamps and floor lamps where the wall switch is not accessible or not present. Inline cable switches are available in white, chrome, brass and antique brass to match the ceiling rose and lamp holder finish. They are push-button or rocker type and rated for standard LED and incandescent loads. Installation requires no tools beyond stripping the flex at the switch connection points. Lumination also stocks dimmer inline switches from Magnalux for LED-compatible inline dimming on pendant lights rated up to 150 W.
