Lampshade Profiles: Drum, Empire and Coolie Styles

Lampshade profiles affect both the distribution of light and the visual character of the lamp. A drum shade has equal top and bottom diameters, producing a cylindrical form that directs light evenly downward and upward in equal measure when fitted over a translucent liner. An empire shade has a small top diameter and a much wider bottom, producing a broadly spread downward light cone, the classic floor lamp and table lamp silhouette. A coolie shade is an extreme taper with a very small top and very wide, flat bottom, directing almost all light downward in a wide spread, suited to pendant and table lamp use where direct downward task light is needed.

Lumination also stocks glass lampshades for fittings that require a glass bowl or globe in place of a fabric shade, and shade fittings and parts for shade rings, carriers and adapters. For complete custom pendant kits including ceiling rose and flex, see cable sets.

Lampshade Ring Fittings: ES, SES and Pendant

The shade ring is the wire ring inside the shade that connects it to the lamp holder or pendant. ES (Edison Screw / E27) rings fit standard E27 large screw lamp holders. SES (Small Edison Screw / E14) rings fit E14 small screw holders. BC (Bayonet Cap / B22) rings fit B22 bayonet holders. Pendant rings attach to a pendant bulb holder via a gimbal ring that allows the shade to hang level regardless of the holder angle. Confirm the ring type of your existing lamp holder before ordering a replacement shade. Lumination lists the ring fitting type on every lampshade in this range.

Choosing the Right Lampshade Size for a Table Lamp Base

The shade diameter should be roughly equal to the height of the lamp base, or up to 5 to 10 cm smaller. A 50 cm tall lamp base suits a shade with a bottom diameter of 40 to 50 cm. A shade narrower than the base height looks pinched and top-heavy. A shade significantly wider than the base height looks bottom-heavy. For table lamps with a distinctive base shape, the shade profile should complement rather than compete with the base: a ceramic urn base suits a plain drum or empire shade in a neutral fabric that allows the base to remain the visual focus.

Frequently Asked Questions

The bottom diameter of a lampshade for a table lamp should be approximately equal to the height of the base, give or take 5 to 10 cm. A base of 45 cm height suits a shade with a bottom diameter of 35 to 50 cm. For floor lamps, a shade diameter of 40 to 60 cm is typical. The shade height should be in proportion to the base: for a table lamp base of 40 cm, a shade of 20 to 25 cm in height is proportionate. For a pendant light shade, the diameter depends on ceiling height and the role of the fitting: a dining room pendant shade of 40 to 60 cm suits a standard dining table. Lumination lists all shade dimensions (top diameter, bottom diameter, height and slant height) on every lampshade product page, and with 25 years of specialism in residential lighting our team can advise on shade-to-base matching.
The lampshade ring is the wire fitting inside the shade that connects it to the lamp holder. For E27 (large Edison screw) lamp holders, you need an ES ring. For E14 (small Edison screw) holders, you need an SES ring. For B22 (bayonet cap) holders, you need a BC ring. For pendant fittings where the shade is suspended from a pendant holder, a pendant gimbal ring is used. The ring type is stamped or printed on the existing shade ring, or can be identified by the lamp holder type in your fitting. Lumination lists the ring fitting type for every lampshade in this range. If you are unsure which ring type you need, the team at Lumination's Taunton showroom or by phone can confirm based on your fitting description. Free delivery applies to all orders over £75.
A drum shade has equal or near-equal top and bottom diameters, giving a cylindrical form. It distributes light evenly above and below, creating ambient glow from both the top and bottom of the shade when a translucent liner is used. A drum shade suits contemporary and Scandi-influenced interiors. An empire shade has a small top diameter that widens significantly to a much larger bottom diameter, producing the classic taper associated with traditional British table and floor lamps. It directs most light downward in a broad cone with limited upward spread. An empire shade suits traditional, period and transitional interiors and pairs particularly well with ceramic, brass and turned wood lamp bases. Lumination stocks both drum and empire shades in linen, cotton and velvet fabrics.
Not all lampshades are suitable for pendant fittings. Lampshades designed for table lamps use ES, SES or BC rings that clip onto the lamp holder bulb, which is not a secure suspension method for a hanging pendant. For pendant fittings, use a shade with a pendant gimbal ring or a shade carrier that attaches to the pendant lamp holder via a dedicated ring. Additionally, the shade must be proportionate in weight for a pendant: heavy fabric shades with metal frames can exceed the weight tolerance of standard pendant fittings. Lumination lists the maximum weight and fitting type for all lampshades suitable for pendant use. For pendant-specific shade options and complete custom pendant kits, the cable sets range combines ceiling rose, flex, holder and shade ring in a single pack from Lampfix.
Yes. Lumination stocks glass lampshades in the dedicated glass lampshades range. Glass shades include clear, opal, smoked and amber globes and bowl shades for fittings that use a glass bowl or globe as the diffuser rather than a fabric shade. Glass shades are typically used in pendant fittings, ceiling fittings and vintage Edison-style bare-bulb pendants where a glass globe protects the bulb while maintaining a decorative open look. Glass shades from Lampfix are available in E27, B22 and E14 ring fittings.
