Surface Mounted vs Recessed Kitchen Spotlights

The two installation types serve the same purpose but suit different ceiling constructions.

Surface-mounted spotlights: Fixed flush to the ceiling surface. No ceiling void needed. Single, double, quad, and five-bar configurations. The bar-mount style places multiple heads on a single backplate, reducing the number of cable drops. Works in kitchens with solid concrete or timber joist ceilings without accessible voids.

Recessed spotlights (downlights): Sit inside a cut hole in the plasterboard or ceiling. Cleanest finish. Requires 80-150mm void above the ceiling. See recessed spotlights for the full GU10 and integrated LED downlight range.

Spacing Kitchen Spotlights for Even Coverage

The standard spacing formula for kitchen ceiling spotlights: divide the ceiling height by two to get the spacing between fixtures.

• 2.4m ceiling: 1.2m spacing centre-to-centre
• 2.7m ceiling: 1.35m spacing (round to 1.3m in practice)
• 3.0m ceiling: 1.5m spacing

For a 3m x 4m (12m2) kitchen at 2.4m ceiling height, a 3 x 4 grid of spotlights at 1m spacing (12 fittings) gives even light with no dark zones. Each GU10 at 450 lumens gives 5,400 lumens total, exceeding the 3,000-5,000 lumen target.

IP Ratings for Kitchen Spotlights Above the Sink

The area within 1.2 metres horizontally of the sink is treated as a splash zone in most Part P interpretations. IP44 is the recommended rating for spotlights in this position. Most spotlights in this collection are not IP rated by default; look for the IP44 models specifically for sink-adjacent positions, or use a damp-rated GU10 lamp in a standard fitting as an interim measure.

Dimmable Kitchen Spotlights

Most GU10 LEDs in this collection are dimmable when paired with a compatible trailing-edge LED dimmer. The dimmer must be rated for LED minimum loads: a 10-spotlight circuit at 5W per lamp is 50W total, which falls within most LED dimmers' rated range (10-250W is common). Avoid push-on rotary dimmers designed for halogen, as these typically use a leading-edge circuit that causes LEDs to flicker or buzz.
