Kitchen Island Pendant Lights: Height, Spacing and Number

The standard guidance for hanging a pendant light over a kitchen island is to position the bottom of the shade 70 to 90 cm above the worktop surface. Lower than 70 cm places the fitting in the direct sightline of someone standing at the island. Higher than 90 cm begins to lose the focused task light effect and makes the pendant feel disconnected from the island. For islands over 100 cm wide, Lumination recommends confirming the pendant is centred over the island width, not pushed toward the front edge.

For island length, one pendant per 60 to 80 cm of island is the standard guide. A 120 cm island suits two pendants. A 180 cm island suits two to three pendants. For longer islands of 200 cm or more, a linear bar light that spans the island length is often a cleaner alternative to a row of individual pendants. Kitchen Island Light Styles: Industrial, Contemporary and Classic

Industrial-style kitchen island pendants use cage frames, copper and brass metalwork, and Edison-style filament bulbs at 2,200 K to 2,700 K. These suit kitchens with exposed brick, concrete worktops and dark cabinetry. For kitchen islands of 180 cm or longer, a linear bar pendant that spans the island is often more practical than multiple individual pendants. Bar lights provide an even spread of light across the full island length, avoid the visual repetition of multiple identical shades, and simplify the wiring to a single ceiling rose.
