Frequently Asked Questions
Lumination stocks glass lampshades in opal white, smoked, clear, ribbed, and textured finishes from Endon and DAR. Profile shapes available include dome, globe, bell, and flared designs, covering both pendant and ceiling fitting applications. Neck diameters vary across the range — always confirm the neck size matches your existing lampholder before ordering. With 25 years of specialism in residential lighting and 1,797+ Google reviews at 4.8 stars, Lumination provides accurate product dimensions on all glass shade listings. If you need help identifying the correct shade for an existing fitting, our team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms can assist with measurements and matching before you order.
To measure a replacement glass lampshade, you need three dimensions: the neck diameter (the circular opening at the top that fits over the lampholder or shade ring), the maximum overall diameter of the shade, and the overall height of the shade. The neck diameter is the critical measurement — if it is too large or too small, the shade will not fit securely on the lampholder. Most glass shades in Lumination's range include full dimensions in millimetres on the product page. Bring the old shade or lampholder measurements to Lumination's Taunton or Wellington showroom for a direct comparison, or contact our team with your measurements for remote assistance.
Glass pendant shades suit decorative LED filament bulbs (E27 globe or Edison format) or standard E27 GLS LED bulbs depending on the shade type. For clear and smoked glass shades where the bulb is visible, a decorative filament bulb in warm white (2700K) enhances the visual effect. For opal glass shades where the bulb is hidden by diffusion, any standard E27 LED is appropriate. Avoid using excessively high-wattage bulbs in glass shades — check the shade's maximum wattage rating, typically stated on the product listing. Lumination's decorative and standard LED bulb ranges cover all common base formats. Free delivery applies to orders over £75.
Glass lampshades are not inherently IP-rated for bathroom use. For a glass shade to be used in a bathroom, the complete fitting (lampholder, canopy, shade, and wiring) must carry the appropriate IP rating for the bathroom zone: IP44 minimum for Zone 2 (more than 60cm from the bath or shower edge), IP65 for Zone 1. A glass shade alone does not provide water or moisture protection. Lumination's bathroom ceiling and wall light collections include purpose-designed IP-rated fittings with glass elements where appropriate. Do not attempt to fit a standard glass shade in a bathroom zone without confirming the complete fitting's IP rating with an electrician or lighting specialist.
Opal glass lampshades use frosted or milky white glass that diffuses the light source evenly across the whole shade surface. This eliminates glare and hot spots, producing a soft, uniform glow — the bulb filament is completely hidden. Clear glass lampshades allow full visibility of the bulb, making the filament and light source visible as part of the design. Smoked glass provides a tinted, atmospheric version of the same effect. For decorative filament bulbs where the lamp's appearance is part of the scheme, clear or smoked glass is the correct choice. For functional pendant shades in kitchens, dining rooms, and hallways where glare control matters more, opal glass is preferred. Lumination stocks both in multiple profiles.
