Choosing a Chandelier: Drop, Width and Ceiling Height

The most important dimension when choosing a chandelier is the total drop from the ceiling rose to the lowest point of the fitting, including the lowest arm or pendant drop. For a dining room chandelier, the bottom of the fitting should hang no lower than 60 cm above the dining table. In an entrance hallway, the fitting must clear 2.1 m from the floor as a minimum. A rough guide for chandelier width is to add the room dimensions in metres (length plus width) and express that figure in centimetres, so a room of 4 m x 5 m suits a chandelier approximately 90 cm in diameter. Lumination lists total drop and width on every chandelier product page.

For rooms with limited ceiling height where a chandelier is not practical, see flush ceiling lights or pendant lights for lower-profile alternatives. For stairwells where a long drop is needed, our stairwell lighting range includes chandeliers with extended drops up to 3 m.

Chandelier Styles: Crystal, Multi-Arm and Contemporary

Crystal chandeliers from Franklite use machine-cut crystal trimmings that refract light into prism effects across the room. These suit period and Georgian-style interiors and are available in chrome and gold finishes with arm counts from 5 to 24. Elstead produces designer-led chandeliers that interpret the multi-arm format in contemporary materials including antique gold, graphite and champagne. Endon offers statement cluster pendants that read as modern chandeliers, using smoked glass globes and brushed brass metalwork.

Contemporary chandeliers from DAR Lighting use geometric wire frames, linear bar formats and mixed-metal combinations that suit modern open-plan living and dining spaces. For spaces that need a chandelier to double as the primary light source, check the total lumen output of the fitting, as many decorative crystal chandeliers are designed for atmosphere rather than high-output general lighting, and will need supplementary floor lamps or wall lights.

Chandelier Lamp Types and LED Compatibility

Most chandeliers in Lumination's range use E14 small Edison screw or E27 large Edison screw lamp fittings. Candelabra-arm chandeliers typically use E14 lamps, which are available as LED replacements from our E14 LED bulb range. Using LED candelabra bulbs reduces running costs significantly: a 5-arm chandelier switching from 40 W halogen E14 candles to 4 W LED equivalents reduces consumption from 200 W to 20 W per use session. Lumination's team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms can advise on LED compatibility for specific chandelier models, particularly for chandeliers with dimmer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

In a dining room, the bottom of the chandelier should hang between 60 cm and 75 cm above the dining table surface for a table with standard seating. This keeps the fitting within visual connection of the table without obstructing sightlines across it. For rooms with ceilings above 3 m, the chandelier can hang slightly higher and still feel anchored to the table. In a dining room with a ceiling below 2.7 m, a chandelier with a maximum total drop of 80 cm is usually the limit before the fitting starts to feel oppressive. Lumination lists the total drop for every chandelier, including minimum and maximum adjustable range, so you can confirm the fit before ordering.
A widely used guide is to add the room length and width in metres and convert to centimetres for the chandelier diameter. A 4 m x 4 m dining room suits a chandelier of approximately 80 cm in diameter, while a 5 m x 6 m room suits a fitting of 110 cm or more. Over a dining table, the chandelier should be no wider than the table itself and ideally 30 to 50 cm narrower. Lumination's team at the Taunton and Wellington showrooms has been advising on chandelier sizing for residential and commercial spaces for more than 25 years and can help confirm the right scale for your specific room and ceiling height.
Yes. Most chandeliers in Lumination's range use E14 or E27 lamp fittings, both of which have excellent LED options. LED candelabra bulbs for E14 chandelier fittings now deliver 400 to 600 lumens per bulb at 3 to 5 W, compared with 40 W for an equivalent halogen candle. This gives a significant running cost reduction for a chandelier with six or more arms. Check that the LED bulbs you choose are marked as dimmable if the chandelier is on a dimmer circuit, and verify the minimum load of your dimmer switch, as LED loads can fall below the minimum threshold of older dimmers. Lumination's E14 LED bulb range includes dimmable options from Lampfix.
Lumination stocks chandeliers from Franklite, Elstead, Endon and DAR Lighting. Franklite is one of the UK's longest-established chandelier manufacturers, specialising in crystal and multi-arm designs in chrome, gold and antique finishes. Elstead brings designer interpretations of the chandelier format using premium materials and finishes. Endon produces contemporary statement pieces that sit between a cluster pendant and a traditional chandelier. DAR Lighting covers the broadest price range, from accessible multi-arm fittings through to premium statement pieces. Lumination has stocked all four brands for many years, selected by our buying team through direct relationships with each manufacturer.
Chandeliers with drops exceeding 60 cm are generally not suited to rooms with ceilings below 2.4 m. However, smaller flush-mount chandeliers and semi-flush chandelier-style fittings with drops of 20 to 35 cm can work in lower-ceiling rooms. These are sometimes called chandelier-style ceiling lights and give the ornate multi-arm look of a chandelier without the drop of a traditional design. Lumination's Taunton showroom has examples of both pendant-hung and semi-flush chandelier designs displayed, so you can judge the proportion in person. For rooms with very limited ceiling height, flush ceiling lights are the safer starting point.
